Seagull House

Seddon

Seagull House is a newly refurbished and extended 4 bedroom plus study home, located in the quiet inner-western suburb of Seddon. The home was designed for a busy family; a banker, a teacher and 2 daughters. Because of the close age gap between the daughters, their bedrooms have a slide-away wall to allow better connection between, that can facilitate a delightful common area for play or sleepovers. This home culminates a particular feature of Rara’s design approach; which is all about the experience as you journey through the home. From room to room, up steps and around corners, there’s always a new perspective and something new and intriguing in your sightline. Rara has started to hone its aesthetic of minimising colour and material to truly express the built form and celebrate the contained spaces. The simple colour palette steps away from fast fashion and lends the home to a peaceful oasis for the family, from the moment they step in through the front door. The project brief; a large 4 bedroom family home with various ancillary areas was substantial for a 341 sqm site. Rara decided to separate the new from the old, introducing various hues of light into the home. The concept was to split the garden into east and west, with a passage cutting through the centre, celebrating the journey through the home, starting from the original Edwardian, then through the gardens, and back in again, welcomed by a roaring fireplace. All of the spaces were cleverly designed to maximise usable space, with a total floor area of 206 sqm, which was heavily controlled by Council guidelines. Within this space is a large home theatre, a master suite with a luxurious ensuite bathroom and a children’s retreat adjacent the bedrooms. The addition is inconspicuous along the street and respects heritage character, while providing the family the comforts and luxury of a modern elegant home.
